The Origins of Waacking
On Saturday, July 11, I had the opportunity to attend the final rounds of the All World Waacking Battle Grand Palais in Paris.
Waacking is part of the street dance family. This form of artistic expression, which originated on the streets of Los Angeles and New York, quickly spread around the world to become a major cultural phenomenon.
Waacking originated in Los Angeles the 1970s, within the gay community African American and Latin American.
This dance is best known for its fast, whipping arm movements ("whacks"), performed around the body in rhythm with the music.
Waacking is mainly danced to disco, funk, and house music, with fast tempos and distinct rhythms.

At the Grand Palais, the «battle» lasted five hours, during which hundreds of couples from different countries competed against each other, selected by a jury.
The finalists were the French couple Maelys and Lady D, as well as the Italian couple Ghime and Sophy.

The winners were Ghime and Sophy.
Emotion and storytelling are essential. The dancers express themselves with their entire bodies—including their faces—just like true dramatic performers.
